Dog Gone Puppy Training (Maternity Leave)

Neko, the adorable puppy!

Have you seen our newest family member, yet? Little Neko has only been with us for a week, now, and he’s already grown by a few pounds. If he keeps going at this rate, he’ll be the size of a school bus by Christmas. You know how you can tell a dog is going to be big by the size of its feet? Well, he’s all belly, and his body’s got some catching up to do!

Look at that belly!

Last week I asked you all for some healthy treat ideas for him, and some of you suggested apples or carrots. Well, I introduced him to his first carrot a few days ago, and he practically lost his mind over it. He immediately figured out that it had come from the fridge, and now sits in the kitchen, waiting for me to open the door. He thinks with his stomach, that’s for sure!

Neko, the adorable puppy!

When he’s not thinking about food, he is constantly on the move. It’s like having a child, only with teeth and claws, and seriously hyped up on caffeine. He has a penchant for chewing on things he’s not supposed to, and hasn’t quite figured out the concept of not peeing in the house yet.

Of course, that’s to be expected with a pup his age, but it means we have some work to do in the training department… which is why I’m taking a little hiatus over the next week or so to work with him. Think of it as a very brief maternity leave. I have a trip coming up, and my hope is to have him potty trained before I go. (Fingers crossed!)

Don’t worry, though… I’ll still be cooking up a storm, and should have some awesome recipes to share when I get back!

In the meantime, I’m off to brush up on my dog training skills. Patience, consistency, firmness… and trying not to get too distracted by how freakin’ cute he is.

Neko, the adorable puppy!

I didn’t say it would be easy.

(Recipe posts should return to their normal schedule starting Friday the 18th, or Tuesday the 22nd — wish me luck!)

Oh man how can you not just completely melt around him- so freakin’ adorable…that is why Justin is the enforcer at our house :)

Haha, it’s tough, no question. I think it’s just the opposite, here — I do most of the enforcing, while T-hubs gets to be the fun one who comes home from work and plays with him. I wonder which one of us he likes more? :P

It’s all par for the course! Watson was the same way for a while, good luck potty training and have a great trip!

Thanks! By the way, I absolutely love the name Watson for a dog. When we were talking about naming Neko, I actually said that if we had a cat we could name them Sherlock and Watson. (I don’t think T-Hubs that it was as good an idea as I did, though.) :P

This puppy will, in all likelihood, implode the interwebs with its cuteness.

    • Willow Arlen October 10, 2013 at 9:06 pm #

If the internet can handle the “cutest cat in the world”, I’m sure it can handle my puppy. I hope…

cute overload! potty training isn’t bad if you really stick with it, in my experience. and shepherds are smart: they mostly just want to make you happy and proud, so i bet it doesn’t take long. good luck! :)

He should get it, soon. I’m not worried. (She says, trying to convince herself). And he does look like a shepherd, doesn’t he? His mom is akita/husky, and we’re pretty sure his dad is lab/golden. A weird combo, but all good stuff. Should be handsome when he gets bigger!

I am so in love with your little guy! What a cutie! Also…love the carrot idea! I’m going to have to look into that for my girl!

It was great meeting you last week, Willow! :)

    • Willow Arlen October 22, 2013 at 8:40 pm #

Thanks, Karly! I know quite a few dogs who like carrots (baby carrots make especially easy treats). I really like having something healthier to give him when I’m working on training, too.

And it was great to meet you, too! I had so much fun, and am looking forward to keeping up with everyone. :)
