Every year for our anniversary, The Husband and I go to a park a few miles from our house. It’s the park we got married in, the park I proposed in (yep, I proposed to him)… it’s where we go to remember.
Today wasn’t looking good for us. It was scheduled to thunderstorm most of the day, with barely a break in sight. Then, it was like the sky suddenly remembered it was our anniversary… “oh yeah, it can’t rain today!” and bam, the sun came out. It was like the whole world smiled at us.
As many of you know, I’ve moved from this space to a new website that’s all about gratitude. As we walked through the park on this suddenly sunny afternoon, that’s what was on my mind. How grateful I am for seven years together, five years married, and countless walks in this park with our dog Neko. And, since writing about our day and sharing it here is part of our tradition, I also felt a wave of gratitude for this little corner of the internet that I’ve called home for almost as long as I’ve called this guy mine.
(If you want to follow me on to the new site, you can find me here: thegratitudelog.com.)
What a ride the past five years have been. The photo above may seem idyllic — and indeed it was, the trees in full bloom, leaves studded with raindrops while the sun filtered through — but so much of marriage isn’t quite so lovely. It takes hard work, and patience, and a willingness to try and fail and try again. We’ve learned and grown so much in the past five years, and I am grateful for it all… even the times that haven’t been so picture perfect. There are reservoirs of love within us, and I’ve yet to find the bottom.
Happy anniversary, my love. Here’s to another year with you.
